Gapped Teeth

Gapped teeth, also called diastema, happen when there is extra space between two or more teeth. This is common between the upper front teeth and can result from tooth size, jaw growth, missing teeth, or habits like tongue thrusting. Some gaps close on their own as a child grows, while others need orthodontic guidance to bring teeth together and create a more even bite.

How Gaps Are Evaluated

  • Digital Intraoral Scanning — captures a precise 3D model of the teeth and gap without messy impression trays.
  • Digital Dental X-Rays — give a clear view of tooth roots and any developing teeth still below the gumline.
  • Digital Treatment Planning — combines scans and X-rays into one plan that maps how the space will close over time.

Treatment Options

  • Traditional Metal Braces — brackets and wires that gradually bring gapped teeth together.
  • Clear Braces and Champagne-Colored Braces — move teeth the same way with a less noticeable appearance.
  • Invisalign Clear Aligners or Gapped Teeth — removable aligners that close smaller gaps for patients who prefer a less visible option.
  • Orthodontic Retainers — help hold teeth in their new position once the gap has closed.
