Cephalometric X-Rays

A cephalometric X-ray is a side-profile image of the head that shows how the teeth, the jaws, and the surrounding facial bones sit in relation to one another. At Crystal Clear Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Aesha Chaudhry uses it to measure those relationships rather than estimate them, which is what makes an orthodontic plan specific to one patient.

Why Orthodontics Uses It

Bite relationships — how the upper and lower jaws line up, and whether the bite issue comes from the teeth, the jaws, or both.
Growth patterns — in children and teens, the direction the jaw is growing helps decide whether to start treatment now or wait.
Tracking progress — a follow-up image can be compared against the first to confirm treatment is moving the way it was planned.

What the Visit Is Like

Like a panoramic scan, the image is captured from outside the mouth in a matter of seconds, using a low dose of radiation. The two are often taken at the same appointment because they show different things.
