Habit Appliances
Habit Appliances
Thumb-sucking and tongue-thrusting are normal in early childhood, but when they carry on as the adult teeth arrive they can push the front teeth forward and change the shape of the bite. A habit appliance is a small fitted device that interrupts the habit gently, giving the bite a chance to develop normally. Dr. Aesha Chaudhry fits them at Crystal Clear Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry as part of pediatric orthodontic care.
When One Is Considered
- The habit has outlasted the baby teeth — the concern is not the habit itself so much as how long it continues once permanent teeth are coming in.
- The bite is already changing — front teeth beginning to flare outward, or an opening between the upper and lower teeth when the jaw is closed.
- Encouragement alone has not worked — an appliance is a next step after gentler approaches, not a first resort.
What to Expect
The appliance is a reminder rather than a punishment, and most children adjust within a couple of weeks. It stays in place until the habit has stopped, then comes out.
